An Overview of the Yamas and Niyamas

The yamas and niyamas are considered yoga’s ethical guide to living. They are the first two limbs of the eight-limbed path of yoga as outlined by Patañjali in the Yoga-Sūtra. When we weave these guiding principles into the fabric of our daily life, we live from our center — our true nature.

Inner Observances

The Yamas and Niyamas can be practiced in many different ways.

Some suggestions include:

1. Practicing mindfulness and self-awareness to help observe your thoughts and actions.

2. Practicing self-care such as getting enough rest, eating healthy foods, and engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation.

3. Practicing non-attachment and acceptance by letting go of expectations and learning to be content with what is.

4. Practicing devotion and gratitude by connecting with a higher power and expressing appreciation for the blessings in your life.

5. Practicing compassion and kindness by being understanding and empathetic towards others.

6. Practicing truthfulness and honesty by being authentic and using your words carefully.

7. Practicing moderation in all areas of your life.

8. Practicing self-discipline and focus by setting goals and working towards them.

In my book, Love Thyself, First + Always, I offer more details about each of these rules and how to incorporate them into your life.
